A Big Thank You to everyone who attended the Bread & Cheese Clean-up this past Saturday (4/10/10). We had a great turn out and removed on heck of a lot of trash and debris from the creek! Giving up part of one’s weekend is a big sacrifice, and it is truly appreciated. It is appreciated not only by me, but the residents along the section of Bread and Cheese Creek we cleaned, by Back River where the stream empties, and by the Chesapeake Bay were all these waters eventually flow.
Everyone worked hard, they put their backs in to it and dug out shopping carts, they used their personal vehicles to haul trash to the dumpsters, they pushed wheel barrels full of junk, they waded into the chilly waters and the entire time everyone laughed and smiled. Some people were only able to stay for a few hours, others arrived before 7 AM and left after 4 PM, but everyone was wonderful help, and all help was appreciated.
Anyone can see the huge difference before and after the cleanup. Four thirty yard dumpsters were filled, two with trash, two with metal (mostly shopping carts) and huge stacks of natural debris were all removed from the creek. Some of the more noteworthy debris included three hundred and two bags of trash, twenty-two shopping carts, seventeen tires, six bicycles, four skateboards, two porcelain sinks, a bath tub, an industrial cable spool, a swing set, and a boogie board.
The Future of Bread & Cheese Creek…
What we did on Saturday was fantastic! However, we need to continue this effort. In order to do this, I am looking for individuals who would like to be part of a Clean Bread and Cheese Creek Council. If we have multiple people working on this, it will make planning and running future clean-ups easier and run more smoothly!
The next major clean-up will be next year. This will most likely be Saturday, April 2, 2011 during Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay Project Clean Stream Event and it would target the Area from just before Old North Point following the creek East.
Once again, thank you to everyone! You all did a fantastic job! And to those who weren’t able to attend, we hope to see you next time! Comments, questions, feel free to contact me!
